Summer
Associate Program
Gjerset & Lorenz offers summer associate positions
to a handful of exceptional law students. We seek bright,
talented students who are near the top of their class
and possess strong interpersonal, leadership, writing
and analytical skills. The goal of our summer program
is to build relationships with the law students with
a view to hiring them as associates after graduation.
Real
Experience
Our summer program offers law students an opportunity
to do real legal work and bridge the gap between law
school and legal practice. We want our summer associates
to see a realistic picture of what it means to be a
Gjerset & Lorenz attorney. Summer associates work
on a broad variety of projects. They work on real projects
for real clients. Work assignments are structured to
ensure that summer associates gain some experience in
every one of the firm’s practice areas and, have
an opportunity to work with a number of different attorneys.
Guidance
and Evaluation
We understand that summer associates want to know how
they perform as lawyers rather than as law students.
Our evaluation process begins the day the summer associate
arrives. We explain to each associate the criteria that
will be used to evaluate performance so that each associate
knows how he or she will be appraised. Summer associates
receive thorough feedback on every assignment. We understand
that ongoing specific and comprehensive feedback is
important to the overall success of an associate’s
clerkship.
Social
Events
Social events are an important part of the summer program.
They allow summer associates and our attorneys to get
to know each other in an informal relaxed setting. Social
activities include organized lunches, dinners and sporting
events.
Compensation
Our 2005 2L summer associates were paid $2000 per week.
We evaluate our compensation rates frequently.
Logistics
Our summer program runs from the beginning of May until
mid-August. The summer is divided into two halves and
summer associates typically spend at least 6 weeks with
the firm.
Offers of Employment
We know that most law students select a summer associate
position with the goal of obtaining a full-time offer
of employment with that firm. Before we select candidates
for our summer program we determine how many 1st year
associate positions we want to offer. That number determines
how many summer associates we bring on board. Every
summer associate has the opportunity to be given an
offer by Gjerset & Lorenz.
How
to Apply
We consider applications from qualified 2L students
from law schools around the country. We have hired summer
associates and associates who have attended schools
such as Baylor University School of Law, Brigham Young
University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School, Northwestern
University School of Law, University of Houston School
of Law, University of Michigan Law School, University
of San Francisco School of Law and University of Texas
School of Law. 1L students are considered on a case
by case basis. If you are interested in participating
