Gjerset & Lorenz offers summer associate positions to a select number of exceptional law students each year. We seek bright, talented students who are near the top of their class and who possess strong interpersonal, leadership, writing, and analytical skills. Our summer program is intended to expose law students to the real-world practice of health law and to build relationships with a primary goal of hiring students as associates after graduation.
Although Gjerset & Lorenz is headquartered in Austin, Texas, we accept summer associates from law schools nationwide. We have recently considered applicants from schools including the University of Texas, Duke University, the University of Virginia, University of Michigan, Vanderbilt University, and Washington University at St. Louis.
Our summer program typically runs from the beginning of May to the middle of August. Summer associates typically spend at least six weeks with the firm.
Our summer program seeks to bridge the gap between law school and legal practice by giving students practical exposure to health law issues. We try to paint a realistic picture for our summer associates of what it means to be a health law attorney with Gjerset & Lorenz.
To this end, we expose summer associates to a broad variety of projects that pertain to actual clients. Work assignments are structured to offer summer associates experience in every one of the firm’s practice areas and to expose them to work with a number of different attorneys.
Mentoring and Evaluation
Gjerset & Lorenz employs a mentoring and evaluation process that begins on an associate’s first day. We explain the criteria we use to evaluate our associates’ performance, so they know what to expect and where to focus. We understand the importance of comprehensive feedback to a summer associate’s overall success, and summer associates receive thorough and specific feedback on every assignment.
We recognize most law students choose summer associate programs with the goal of receiving an offer of full-time employment with the firm. Therefore, before selecting candidates for our summer associate program, we determine the number of first-year associate positions we wish to offer in the coming year. This informs us of the summer associate positions to fill. Based on the quality of their work, each summer associate has an opportunity to receive a job offer from Gjerset & Lorenz.
How to Apply
Gjerset & Lorenz accepts applications from qualified second-year law students from around the country. First-year law students are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Additionally, to encourage diversity in the legal profession, Gjerset & Lorenz has established a 1L Diversity Fellowship for its summer program. Gjerset & Lorenz recognizes that diversity exists in many different forms, including gender, race, national origin, religion, age, veteran status, political affiliation, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, first generation college students, life experience, and personal background. The 1L Diversity Fellowship is open to students with diverse backgrounds, with records of outstanding academic achievement, and who demonstrate potential to excel in the legal profession.
